Colonoscopies and colorectal cancer.

Regular colonoscopies can help you stay on top of your colorectal health and catch any potential health concerns as early as possible.

Colorectal cancer almost always develops as abnormal growths in your colon or rectum. During a colonoscopy, your physician will look for these growths, called polyps, and remove them before they turn into cancer.

Learn more about colon cancer screening and treatment.

We recommend colonoscopies once every ten years for men and women ages 45 to 75, but those at higher risk of colorectal cancer based on family history may need to be screened earlier. Your colonoscopy can detect cancer in its earliest stages when treatment is the most effective.

Colorectal cancer risk factors.

You are at an increased risk for colorectal cancer if you:

  • Are over the age of 45.
  • Have a family history of colorectal cancer.
  • Have a personal history of colon polyps.
  • Have been diagnosed with inflammatory bowel disease such as Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis.

About 90 percent of colorectal cancer cases occur in people who are 50 or older.
