A hospitalist is a provider who specializes in caring for patients while they are in the hospital. Hospitalists work closely with your primary care provider and frequently inform him or her of your condition.

When you require hospitalization, your provider or an Emergency Department physician will coordinate your admission with a hospitalist. The hospitalists are on site 24 hours a day and work closely with all hospital staff to coordinate your care.

Dr. Sallie Benke is part of our Health First hospitalist team. She is board certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Microbiology from the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, AL and her Medical Degree from the University of South Alabama in Mobile, AL. Dr. Benke completed her internship and residency in Internal Medicine at the University of South Alabama where she also served as Chief Medical Resident.

Before joining Health First, Dr. Benke worked as a hospitalist with Piedmont Newman Hospital in Newnan, GA. She has also worked as a hospitalist for Springhill Medical Center in Mobile, AL. Dr. Benke is a member of the American Medical Association.
