Between Health First’s two Labor and Delivery units at Holmes Regional Medical Center and Cape Canaveral Hospital, four babies were born overnight between 12 a.m. and sunrise: [clockwise from top left] mother Demitriana Ward with baby Jakai, parents Ashley and Josh Protze with baby Oliver, mother Mary Roberto and baby Johnny, and mother Daina King with baby Ruben. Ashley Protze told Florida Today in a feature about her son, Oliver, being Brevard County’s first New Year’s baby, “I really had a pretty good labor experience. I think I pushed for like 10 minutes."

At 12:17 a.m., while most of us were still in the early stages of celebrating the new year, baby Oliver took his first breath at Cape Canaveral Hospital, becoming Brevard County’s first baby of 2023.

Little Oliver is the first child to parents Josh and Ashley. He arrived weighing 7 pounds, 7 ounces, and measuring 19.5 inches.

And he wasn’t Health First’s only early-morning New Year’s baby. He was joined by Baby Johnny, Baby Ruben and Baby Jakai.
