HEALTH FIRST'S SEIICHI NODA, MD, is a board-certified cardiothoracic surgeon. He recently spoke to Vero News and 32963 about “beating heart” or off-pump bypass, which, in the right candidates, can have advantages such as a lower risk of complications, shorter hospital stays and quicker recoveries.

For older patients, the decision to have coronary bypass surgery must weigh factors such as BMI and weight, general health (coronary artery disease or other chronic conditions), lifestyle factors such as smoking, and something called the Six-Minute Walk Test

“We also look at the patient’s support network and family involvement,” he told the publication.

Good candidates will have coronary bypass surgery recommended by their physician – and for some of these, in the hands of a capable surgeon, the procedure will be done off-pump, or "beating heart."
