You could call it the work of an angel. Angel Pesula, HUC/CNA at Health First's Palm Bay Hospital, is working to save lives and using her free time to help her fellow nurses working on the front lines of COVID-19. After clocking out of a long shift, Angel somehow finds the time and energy to get out her sewing machine and embroidery software to fashion beautiful masks and ear savers for her fellow nurse angels.
Angel saw Health First was receiving masks from the community, and some of her favorite nurses were sent to the COVID-19 unit and as a third–generation seamstress, she knew she could help.
She got to work on her sewing machine making beautiful handmade, machine–washable, breathable masks and comfortable ear savers by the hundreds for the nurses at Health First.
“My favorite one says, 'I am the Front Line,' but I'm also partial to the one I made that says, 'I'm not afraid of no 'Rona.' ” Angel watched YouTube tutorials on how to make the masks and ear savers, because there was so much detail required and she had not made them before. The masks involve sewing, lining, folding, ironing, pleating and seaming. The first one took her about 20 minutes, but she can now whip one out in five minutes.
“It makes me feel happy providing some sort of protection and giving back to the front lines,” Angel said. “I would say whatever you can do for this fight, do it.”
