What are the risk factors for Osteoporosis?

  • Not enough calcium and vitamin D.
  • Sedentary lifestyle. You need to exercise- mild strength training with weight-bearing exercise is best
  • Tobacco use
  • Drinking more than two alcoholic drinks daily
  • Getting older
  • Low body weight
  • Parental history of osteoporosis or hip fractures
  • Taking certain medications, especially steroids
  • Ethnicity—Women who are Caucasian or of Southeast Asian decent

What medical conditions and procedures negatively affect bone health?

  • Digestive and gastrointestinal disorders, including weight-loss surgery
  • Autoimmune disorders
  • Endocrine/hormonal disorders
  • Neurological/nervous system disorders
  • Hematologic/blood disorders

What are the symptoms of Osteoporosis?

  • Back pain
  • Loss of height over time
  • Stooped posture
  • Bone fracture, particularly in your back, wrist or hip

How is osteoporosis detected?

  • Two easy, fast and painless tests that measure bone density: Bone mineral density (BMD) test, dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA)
  • Ultrasound

Who should get these tests?

  • Women older than 55 or men older than 70, regardless of risk factors
  • Post-menopausal women with at least one risk factor for osteoporosis
  • Men between age 50 and 65 who have at least one osteoporosis risk factor
  • People older than age 50 with a history of a broken bone
  • People taking medications, such as prednisone, aromatase inhibitors or anti-seizure drugs
  • Post-menopausal women who have recently stopped taking hormone therapy
  • Women who experienced early menopause
