Running, biking, and walking are all great ways to stay active and healthy. We want you to stay safe, too. Here are some practical tips for exercising safely outdoors.
Wear a safety light while running, cycling, or walking.
This little tool could save your life. Not only does a safety light make exercising easier at dawn or dusk — it makes you more visible to motorists and helps them maintain a safe distance.
Wear bright colored, reflective clothing.
There's a reason crossing guards don't wear neutral colors. The brighter your clothes, the better. Bonus points for reflective accents.
Stroll on the sidewalk.
Always choose to use the sidewalk when possible. Like your own personal pedestrian highway, it's there to keep walkers a safe distance from cars.
Look both ways.
Check left, right, and left again when crossing the street or making a turn. Nothing matters more than awareness when you're running, cycling, or walking.
Eyes off your phone, please.
Distracted drivers are dangerous, but phone-gazing walkers (or even runners and cyclists) are also a very real hazard — to themselves and others. Enjoy our beautiful sunshine or the companion of an exercise buddy instead.
