We’re excited to welcome incoming 9th grade students to the Health First Healthcare Academy — a unique pathway designed to spark interest in medical careers and prepare students for the future. Through immersive experiences and hands-on learning, students gain real-world exposure to healthcare while developing valuable skills that prepare them for college or the workforce.
Program overview.
9th Grade: Health First representatives will visit the classroom monthly to guide students through career options and a variety of healthcare-related topics. Students may also participate in field trip opportunities to a Health First facility.
10th Grade: In conjunction with their Health Science Anatomy & Physiology class, students study body systems, apply case studies, and experience hands-on learning at a Health First facility.
11th Grade: While taking Health Science Foundations, students build on previously learned skills and focus on healthcare delivery models, employability skills, and leadership development. During this year, they will choose either the Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) or Patient Care Assisting (PCA) pathway.
12th Grade: Students will begin work in their chosen pathway (EMR or PCA) and graduate career-ready with support for their next step.

The program is open to incoming 9th grade students attending Melbourne High School. Enrollment is coordinated through the Melbourne High School Guidance Department.
Yes, there is an application process and GPA requirement. Student must apply to the program and have at least a 2.0 GPA and test scores on file. Students should express interest through their guidance counselor. Space may be limited, and academic performance may be considered to ensure students can balance the program with other coursework.
Students will follow the process for Brevard Public Schools Field trips.
Only if it conflicts with their non PCA class periods.
Yes in EMR they earn the Certified EKG Technician cert and in Nursing Assistant they earn their Certified Nursing Assistant license.
Students will be exposed to Registered Nurses, Certified Nursing Assistants, Physical and Occupational Therapists, Pharmacists, Phlebotomist, Respiratory Therapists Providers, MDs, Pas, and APRNs, Healthcare Leaders/Executives. (included but not limited to)
Graduates gain real-world healthcare exposure, employability skills, and potential certifications that prepare them for college, technical programs, or entry-level healthcare roles.
No, but students will be well-prepared for healthcare education and careers and will have networking opportunities within Health First.
