May 27, 2025 update.

One month has passed since Orlando Health Rockledge Hospital closed. Throughout this critical period, Health First and our partners have remained steadfast in ensuring every member of our community continues to receive timely, high-quality healthcare.

Managing Increased Demand
Since the closure, our Emergency Departments at Viera and Cape Canaveral Hospitals have experienced patient visits and admissions increase by nearly 20%. Despite this surge, patient wait times remain efficient due to the exceptional teamwork, continuous improvement efforts, and strong leadership provided by our Emergency Department teams, including Vice President of Emergency and Trauma Services, Kesha Cummings, RN.

Additionally, we've onboarded 128 former Rockledge team members, including 85 registered nurses, and hired additional clinical staff. These valued team members are crucial to maintaining our high standards for patient care during this challenging time.

Our ambulance offload times remain impressively efficient, averaging just over 8 minutes—less than half the 20-minute benchmark set by EMS—demonstrating the strength of our collaboration with local EMS teams.

Recognition for Reliable Care
Our commitment to patient safety and quality care continues to earn recognition. Recently, Viera and Cape Canaveral Hospitals were named among Newsweek’s "Best Hospitals," and Holmes Regional Medical Center received an "A" safety rating from Leapfrog. These accolades affirm our dedication to reliable healthcare, especially in challenging times.

Investing in Community Healthcare
Today, Health First announced a transformative $230 million expansion of Palm Bay Hospital as part of nearly $800 million worth of investments in Brevard County. This significant project will add a 5-floor patient tower, providing:

· 60 new inpatient beds initially, with two additional floors prepared for future growth—potentially adding another 60 beds.

· Expanded and upgraded Operating Rooms, Cath Labs, and Pre-Op/Recovery areas.

· Improved navigation and facility design, enhancing patient experience and access.

Palm Bay Hospital President Kyle Baxter emphasized the impact, saying, "This expansion will significantly improve access to quality care, aligning with the needs of Brevard’s rapidly growing communities."
