Interventional Radiology

Interventional Radiology is a specialty of medicine utilizing minimally-invasive image-guided procedures to diagnose and treat diseases in nearly every organ system. Such as:

  • Abdomen (intestines, kidneys, liver, stomach)
  • Chest (lungs, respiratory system)
  • Genitourinary (uterus, kidneys)
  • Vascular (arteries, veins, hemodialysis access)
  • Musculoskeletal (bones, joints, spine)

Many issues that once needed surgical repair can now be treated without surgery by interventional radiologists. This reduces physical trauma to the patient and the risk of infection due to shorter hospital stays and recovery time. In addition, there is minimal to no scarring and overall, less pain.

Minimally-invasive IR procedures offered, include:

  • Men's Health
    • Prostate artery embolization
    • Prostate cancer diagnosis
    • Varicose Veins
    • Cancer therapy
    • Infertility
  • Women's Health
    • Uterine fibroid embolization
    • Pelvic pain (chronic)
    • Ovarian vein embolization
    • Infertility- Selective salpingography
    • Vascular arterial disease
    • Varicose Veins
    • Sclerotherapy
  • Hemodialysis and vascular access, including central venous access such as chest and arm ports
  • Vascular disease- peripheral arterial disease, chronic limb ischemia, acute and chronic deep vein thrombosis, venous insufficiency
  • Interventional oncology- Liver-directed cancer therapy including chemoembolization (TACE), radioembolization with Y-90 particles
  • Chronic fluid management with PleurX catheters and Denver shunts
  • Biliary blockage drainage and stenting
  • Inferior vena cava (IVC) filter placement and retrieval
  • Dialysis interventions including hemodialysis catheter insertion and management
  • Kidney tumor ablation
  • Kyphoplasty and vertebroplasty to treat spinal fractures
  • Transjugular intrahepatic portal shunt (TIPS) and BRTO to treat portal hypertension, often caused by cirrhosis of the liver
  • Nephrostomy and renal stent insertion
